The texture, the pace, the setting- it's like watching a serious movie about espionage. It's like a John Le Carre novel (like Tinker Taylor, Most Wanted Man), only silly. I definitely appreciated it more on a second viewing, when it occurred to me that it's their spoof of the spy thriller. It's not bad, it just doesn't fully work for me somehow. I've tried before to articulate my problem with it and for some reason never can. I don't know, I guess I'm just thinking out loud without a real point. but then Fargo jumps around and never has a problem. I was about to say it was the lack of a central protagonist, as most Coen films tend to center on one character. I love A Serious Man and that story is pretty thin. One thing that I can't fully explan, but almost every other Coen film is set in the past (even The Big Lebowski is set about 7 years before the actual release date), and maybe it's just weird to see their tone in a modern setting.įor me it's not the lack of story. though I could watch JK Simmons read Twilight and be entertained. I even enjoy the ending, anti-climactic as it is. I think if someone else had made it, I might like it more, maybe set the bar lower? I'm a huge Coens fan (probably my favorite filmmakers, really), but something is just off about it for me. I can never quite articulate what I don't like about it. It subverts every single expectation you have for a movie like it and maybe mirrors the weird minutia of our lives so well that some people don't like it because it's not a "movie" movie if that makes sense. Or it's kinda funny that no one really understands what's happening but at least no one's getting hurt BAM shot in the face. Like, oh this is a nice movie kind of charming and then BAM dildo chair. In the same way so many people died in Fargo pretty much because Jerry was a total idiot, people died in Burn because no one had any idea what was happening. Everyone is just a regular idiot and the best part is that it all culminates in people actually dying. It's an espionage movie with absolutely no sexual appeal or witty characters. What if the notes she found were just memoirs of a failed writer and a drink? What if she wasn't sexy at all? What if she and everyone helping her had no idea what they were doing? What if her sexy trainer was actually a complete fucking idiot? What if starting a new life to her was getting cosmetic surgery and facing her 40's head on? What if the mysterious man she was seeing was actually an eccentric weirdo? What would it be like if you actually walked into the russian embassy with a Microsoft Word file of some drunk CIA agent ranting about his bosses? What if no one actually had any idea what was going on at all? Sounds like something out of the 60's era of international espionage right? Okay, but what if this was all actually happening and it wasn't glamorous. She enlists the help of her sexy trainer and begins seeing a sexy but mysterious man. A woman finds notes from a CIA agent and wants to sell them to another country so she can start a new life. The great thing that makes Burn After Reading so funny is that it's basically what a spy movie would be like in real life.
